Theatricality and Texture
Art and fashion are two fields of ongoing innovation and creative expression. Yet they are decidedly distinct from one another. While art is generally free from any restrictions, fashion is bound to the demands of a fast-paced industry. Fortunately, there are fashion artists - more or less mainstream, who can reconcile these two areas without compromising both fashion and art.
In the latest Spring/Summer 21 collection my attention immediately went to Loewe’s dramatic silhouettes. Feels like theatre. Let’s admire their show. Playing on sculptural extremes, inflated volumes and sculpted curves while giving a fresh, modernized character is definitely something interesting for the upcoming months. Loewe clothes connect the past with the future, and their traditional aesthetics intrigue with a new, creative version. It’s no different with textures. Just look at this Celine bag and its surface. The canvas and the calfskin do a really good job. Stella McCartney and her characteristic tailoring full of sensuality and femininity is a great example of innovating the forms to enhance the fabrics. The work on materials and finishes offers continuous innovative ideas to those who design and, consequently, for everyday life. Wool pants I’m wearing above came to represent power, equality, and freedom from the restrictions - physical, social, and moral. A perfectly tailored pants convey style and a sense of identity.
Mixing chemistry between art and fashion design has never been so exciting!
